If your job requires you to sign in and out with a time card, never ask a co-worker to sign in or out for you.Not only could you find yourself in serious trouble, but your co-worker will face severe disciplinary action also. The district considers such actions to be fraud.

The Progressive Discipline Policy as outlined in the Classified Contract, is primarily used with Classified Employees (security, clerical, para, etc.), but occasionally is used with Certified Staff (teachers, librarians, etc.).
 

The following are the steps in disciplinary matters:
  • Verbal conversation
  • Letter of Concern
  • Letter of Reprimand
  • Letter of Final Reprimand
  • Termination
KCPS Administration reserves the right to skip steps in the disciplinary process, depending on the severity of the issue or behavior.

One of the primary ways that principals try to get around our contract is by holding "voluntary" meetings. Don't be bullied into attending. You cannot be held accountable or reprimanded for not attending a voluntary meeting. Once members stop showing up, the voluntary meetings will stop. It's up to you.

Think twice before you send a student alone or with another student to the office, the nurse or anywhere else in the building.It is for your own protection that the Union strongly urges members not to send students to the office, counselor, etc. alone. Too many of our members have ended up displaced because of an incident a student had while being unsupervised.

Paraprofessionals, secretaries and other classified staff who are paid hourly should never work beyond their workday without permission. And all hourly employees, except Security Officers, must follow the correct procedure.

  • If your principal/supervisor asks you to work overtime, you must complete the Overtime Request Form (see bookkeeper or click here), and it must be signed by you and your principal/supervisor before doing the overtime.
  • A Request for Payment of Overtime form (click here) must also be signed by both you and your supervisor and must be submitted in that pay period's regular time

Sign in with the accurate time when you arrive at work and sign out with the accurate time when you leave. Do NOT sign in/out at the same time.

Classified Staff (paras, secretaries, etc.) - Do NOT work outside of your designated work day. The district has a very strict policy that prohibits classified staff from working before or after your workday. If you are asked to work overtime, please read the Overtime article below.

Certified Staff (teachers, librarians, counselors etc.) - Sign in the actual hours you work. If you stay after school and work until 5:00, put 5:00 down on the sign out sheet

Texting is a great way to communicate with our parents (and sometimes with students), but please be careful. Stick to education-related messages - nothing personal. And giving out your personal phone number can create problems. Last year, we had a parent who literally stalked a teacher. There are now apps that let teachers text-message students (and their parents) without exchanging actual telephone numbers. The one I'm most familiar with is a free one called Remind. Remind allows teachers to send messages by logging onto the Remind website, or by using the iPhone or Android app. Messages can

Some principals are not clear on duty requirements. Here's what our contract says:• The teacher shall have a twenty-five (25) minute preparation time at the beginning of the day on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.• If student supervision is needed during that time, the Faculty Advisory Committee and administration will develop a fair and equitable duty schedule where teachers will supervise on a rotating basis one time a week. The payout on PTO days follows a formula that only pays you a percentage of the days. It also depends in if you were hired before or after January 1, 2009.
